Description The development of the ability to grasp is of fundamental importance, if a blind child is to get into contact with his surroundings and thereby be able to have a chance to use and develop the other senses available as much as possible. Besides spotlighting the problems involved in developing the ability to grasp, the article presents a number of methodological considerations and gives practical hints as to how material and surroundings can be adapted in general so blind children may be stimulated and encouraged in their development. The article is designed for teachers, psychologists, parents, pre-school teachers and others who in some way are involved in caring for visually impaired children, with or without additional disabilities.
